Founded in 1993, the Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI), is the nation’s premier building performance credentialing, quality assurance, and standards setting organization. BPI tests and certifies individuals to verify that they meet the need for a highly trained, skilled home performance and weatherization workforce. BPI creates industry standards and then develops BPI certifications. BPI is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as a certifying body and developer of American National Standards.


BPI offers certifications, programs, and a certificate (Building Science Principles) for workers in the home performance and weatherization industries. Since 2001, home contractors have earned over 80,000 BPI certifications. As of 2018, contractors across the U.S. hold over 16,000 active BPI certifications. Preparing for, and challenging, BPI online and field exams teaches contractors the fundamentals of home performance assessments, building envelope evaluations, HVAC testing, indoor environmental assessments, and more.
